GREECE AND THE LGBTQIA+ COMMUNITY

Writer's picture: CadriCadri

While we are in this country we want to take the time to talk about the openness Otto the LGBTQIA+ community.

For the last few years Greece showed a big improvement towards the acceptance.

Let’s go down memory lane:

  • In 1951 Greece legalised homosexuality (we still don’t understand that you have to legalised it but, its our reality )

  • In 2015 a law was passed that is allowing civil (so not marriage) for same sex couples

  • In 2016 a law was passed that is ensuring equal protection in workplaces regardless of gender religion or sexual orientation.

  • In 2017 transgender people were given the right to change their legal genre WITHOUT having to undergo surgery.

  • In 2018 same sex couples are granted the rights to foster.

  • In 2018 the law of 2017 is extended to not only the Greek citizens but as well refugees and immigrants.

  • In 2021 trans women are relocated to correctional facilities for women.

  • Greece allows LGBTQIA+ individuals to serve OPENLY in the military.

So can we say that Greece is an LGBTQIA+ friendly country ?

Greece is a really open country when it comes to the lgbtqia+. But lets be honest, as open as it can be their will always be discrimination towards this community from someone. Maybe the reason is that most of the Greek are orthodox. Religion is not an excuse to discriminate, we respect everyone and everyone’s belief, but it might not be reciprocated.

Still as you can see Greece is operating a big shift for the people of the LGBTQIA+ community.

You can feel the openness of this country especially in the big city like Athens, and the islands of Mykonos and Skiathos.

As we are in Athens here are some places LGBTQIA+ friendly:

  • Gazi District: around the Acropolis, its filled with restaurants and bar which are LGBTQIA+ owned.

  • Platin Agaias Irini: not to far from Monastiraki. You will find as well bar and restaurants.
