LGBTQ IN GERMANY

Writer's picture: CadriCadri

In todays blog post we want to highlight the positive rights the LGBTQ community has in Germany and since when they apply.

Lets go down the memory lane:

  • in 1968 east Germany legalised homosexuality, in 1969 west Germany

  • in 1989 a law was passed to equalise the age of consent at 14 in east Germany, and in unified Germany in 1994

  • since 2000 LGBT people are permitted to serve openly in the German Armed Forces; tolerance towards all sexual orientations is considered to be part of the duty of military personnel

  • in 2001 registered partnerships were legalised for same sex couples

  • in 2005 same-sex stepchild adoption became legal

  • in 2006 a law has been passed that bans discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in employment, education, health services and the provision of goods and services.

  • in 2013 a law allowed someone in a same-sex relationship to adopt a child already adopted by their partner.

  • also since 2013 a German law has allowed children born with atypical sexual anatomy to have their gender left blank instead of being categorised as male or female

  • in 2017 the Bundestag passed legislation giving same sex couples marital and adoption rights, later in the year same sex marriage was legalised

  • in 2018, the Federal Court of Justice (Bundesgerichtshof) in Karlsruhe ruled that the wife of the child's legal mother does not automatically become a parent, and that an adoption is necessary

  • in 2019 a law passed that allows intersex individuals to be able to register themselves as "divers" on official documents, but is not applicable to transgender individuals

  • in 2020 conversion therapy for both minors and adults was made illegal

  • in March 2021, it was reported that both transgender and intersex individuals can now serve openly within both the military and police in Germany.

  • also in 2021a law passed that allows gay and bisexual men to donate blood following four months of abstinence from sex

So can we say that Germany is a LGBTQ friendly country?

With all the laws passed you can see that the government protects the LGBTQ community and therefore we do believe that Germany is one of the safest countries in the world.

Some cities that are more than LGBTQIA friendly:

  • Berlin (the best suburb for gay clubs, restaurants etc is Schönefeld)

  • Cologne (known as the other gay capital; you find the best gay scene at Rudolfplatz- Schaafenstraße or Heumarkt-Mathiasstraße)

  • Frankfurt am Main (a few hotspots are the "Karlson", "Orange Peel" and "Zum Schwejk")
